The Challenge

Jessica Harrison is a visual artist and academician of the Royal Scottish Academy. Graduating from Edinburgh University with a practice-based PhD in Sculpture, she researched the relationship between interior and exterior spaces of the body - an area of study that is reflected throughout her art.

Working with a wide variety of materials from ceramics and marble to paint, Jessica explores the mechanics of perception and the fallibility of observation, examining of the interaction between the visual and the tactile.

Central to her body of work is the beautiful and, at times, macabre alterations to Royal Doulton porcelain lady figurines; deconstructing and twisting an overtly romanticised depiction of feminine perfection and presenting them with a new counter-narrative.

As her work continued to attract attention across the globe, Jessica turned to us to help supercharge her website and better reflect her (incredible) work. Challenge accepted.

1.0 Web Design

We kicked things off with a full site audit to identify pain points and reveal untapped opportunities. Our analysis found three main areas for rapid improvement:

  • Website architecture is important as it affects both search engine rankings and user experience. At the time, jessicaharrison.studio partially inherited some architectural quirks from a legacy iteration. So we set about reorganising c.80% of the site pages, bringing fresh search engine friendly order while carefully preserving existing page ranking as we went.

  • When it comes to building a conversion rate and search engine optimised website, speed is crucial. To help make the web a better user experience, Google rewards faster sites by bumping them higher up the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Slow sites, on the other hand, have it rough - first side-eyed, then banished into SERPs obscurity and the traffic you do get is likely to bounce. Loading sucks.

As a high-quality, image rich website, jessicaharrison.studio was suffering on both counts. So we methodically compressed all image files to approximately a tenth of their original weight in exchange for an imperceptibly small reduction in quality.

  • Finally, we ran a one-day, organic SEO workshop to set strategy, fix technical errors, and make site-wide content improvements that make eyes at humans and Google too.

With her retuned website, Jessica’s artistic and commercial upward trajectory has continued unabated, following exhibitions across the world and artist-in-residence stints at the European Ceramic Workcentre and the Jingdezhen International Studio in China.

And just like her legions of devoted fans (and customers), we can’t wait to see where Jessica’s work takes us next.

Client Testimonial β†—

I’m really grateful to Qubit Creations for helping me out at a critical period for my online business.

I couldn’t actually have anticipated how helpful Daniel was with my website as the problems that he fixed and solutions that he found to issues that had bugged me for ages were things that I had just learnt to live with and was mostly trying to ignore.

But after a quick consultation and the application of some expert knowledge, my website was running so much better and the annoying issues had all disappeared.

I’m really grateful to Qubit Creations for helping me out at a critical period for my online business and I’m reassured knowing he’ll be there to help me out again in the future!
